How the Premix Calculator Works
The Premix Calculator (2 Stroke) helps you calculate the proper relationship between fuel and 2-stroke oil using a specified fuel-to-oil ratio such as 20:1, 25:1, 32:1, 40:1, or 50:1.
The calculator works in both directions. You can enter an amount of fuel and calculate how much 2-stroke oil is required, or enter an amount of oil and calculate how much fuel can be mixed with it.
1. Enter the Fuel-to-Oil Mix Ratio
Start by entering the fuel-to-oil ratio required by your engine or equipment.
For example:
- 20 means a 20:1 fuel-to-oil ratio
- 25 means a 25:1 ratio
- 32 means a 32:1 ratio
- 40 means a 40:1 ratio
- 50 means a 50:1 ratio
A 50:1 ratio means that approximately 50 parts of fuel are mixed with 1 part of 2-stroke oil by volume.
Do not choose a ratio simply because it is commonly used. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific engine.
2. Choose Fuel → Oil Mode
Select Fuel → Oil when you know how much fuel you have and want to determine how much 2-stroke oil should correspond to that fuel volume at the selected ratio.
For example, if you select:
- Ratio: 50:1
- Fuel: 1 liter
the basic calculation is:
1 L ÷ 50 = 0.02 L of oil
Because:
0.02 L = 20 mL
the calculator will show approximately:
20 mL of oil
The result is also displayed in liters and US fluid ounces for convenience.
3. Choose Oil → Fuel Mode
Select Oil → Fuel when you already know the amount of 2-stroke oil available and want to calculate the corresponding fuel volume for your selected mix ratio.
Enter the oil amount in milliliters.
For example, with:
- Ratio: 50:1
- Oil: 20 mL
the calculator first converts:
20 mL = 0.02 L
and then calculates:
0.02 L × 50 = 1 L of fuel
The result is displayed in either liters or US gallons depending on your selected unit.
4. Enter the Fuel Volume
When Fuel → Oil mode is selected, enter the amount of fuel you plan to mix.
The unit displayed beside Fuel Volume changes according to your Units selection.
You can use:
- Liters (L)
- US Gallons
If you change between liters and US gallons after entering a fuel amount, the calculator converts the existing value rather than simply treating the same number as a different unit.
For example:
1 liter ≈ 0.264172 US gallons
5. Enter the Oil Volume
When Oil → Fuel mode is selected, enter the amount of 2-stroke oil in:
milliliters (mL)
The calculator converts this value to liters internally before applying the selected fuel-to-oil ratio.
6. Select Liters or US Gallons
The Units control determines which fuel-volume unit is used.
Select:
Liters
for metric fuel measurements.
Select:
US Gallons
for US liquid gallons.
The calculator uses the conversion:
1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters
This is specifically a US liquid gallon, not an Imperial gallon.
7. Select Decimal Precision
The Decimal Precision setting controls how many decimal places are displayed in calculated results.
Available settings are:
- 0 decimal places
- 1 decimal place
- 2 decimal places
- 3 decimal places
Two decimal places are selected by default.
Increasing the precision can be useful when working with smaller fuel or oil quantities.
For extremely small positive results that would otherwise round completely to zero, the calculator may display a value such as:
<0.01
instead of misleadingly displaying the amount as exactly zero.
8. Tap Calculate
After entering your ratio and fuel or oil amount, select:
Calculate
The result depends on the selected mode.
In Fuel → Oil mode, the calculator displays:
- Oil required in liters
- Oil required in milliliters
- Oil required in US fluid ounces
In Oil → Fuel mode, the calculator displays the amount of fuel corresponding to the entered oil volume and selected ratio.
9. Fuel → Oil Formula
When calculating oil from fuel, the basic formula is:
Oil Volume = Fuel Volume ÷ Mix Ratio
For example:
5 L ÷ 50 = 0.1 L oil
Converting liters of oil to milliliters:
0.1 × 1000 = 100 mL oil
Therefore:
5 liters of fuel at 50:1 requires 100 mL of oil.
10. Oil → Fuel Formula
When calculating fuel from a known amount of oil, the formula is:
Fuel Volume = Oil Volume × Mix Ratio
Because the calculator accepts oil in milliliters, it first converts the oil amount to liters:
Oil liters = Oil mL ÷ 1000
For example:
125 mL ÷ 1000 = 0.125 L
At a 40:1 ratio:
0.125 × 40 = 5 L fuel
So 125 mL of oil corresponds to approximately 5 liters of fuel at a 40:1 ratio.
11. Understanding Common Premix Ratios
The required premix ratio varies by engine design, manufacturer, model, operating conditions, and oil specification.
A larger ratio number means proportionally less oil is used.
For example, for the same amount of fuel:
- A 25:1 mixture contains more oil than a 50:1 mixture
- A 32:1 mixture contains more oil than a 40:1 mixture
- A 40:1 mixture contains more oil than a 50:1 mixture
This does not mean that a higher or lower ratio is automatically better. The correct ratio is the one specified for the engine and oil being used.
12. Example: 50:1 Premix
Suppose you have:
5 liters of fuel
and your equipment requires:
50:1
The calculation is:
5 ÷ 50 = 0.1 L oil
Then:
0.1 L × 1000 = 100 mL oil
Your calculated result is therefore:
100 mL of 2-stroke oil
for 5 liters of fuel at a 50:1 ratio.
13. Example: 40:1 Premix
Suppose you have:
5 liters of fuel
and the manufacturer specifies:
40:1
The calculation is:
5 ÷ 40 = 0.125 L
or:
125 mL of oil
The difference between 40:1 and 50:1 is significant enough that you should not substitute one ratio for another without checking the equipment manufacturer’s specifications.
14. Example Using US Gallons
Suppose you enter:
1 US gallon
of fuel with a:
50:1
ratio.
The calculator first converts the gallon to liters:
1 × 3.78541 = 3.78541 L
Then:
3.78541 ÷ 50 = 0.0757082 L oil
Converting to milliliters:
0.0757082 × 1000 ≈ 75.71 mL
So one US gallon of fuel at a 50:1 ratio corresponds to approximately:
75.71 mL of oil
15. Copy Results
After a successful calculation, the Copy Results button appears.
Select it to copy the displayed result to your device’s clipboard.
This makes it easier to paste your premix calculation into notes, messages, maintenance records, or another app.
If direct clipboard access is unavailable in the browser, the calculator attempts to use a fallback copying method.
16. Save a Premix Calculation
After calculating a valid mixture, select:
Save
to store the calculation in your browser.
Saved information can include:
- Fuel-to-oil ratio
- Calculation mode
- Fuel or oil input
- Selected fuel unit
- Decimal precision
- Calculated result
- Date and time saved
Saved calculations are stored locally in the browser using local storage.
They are not automatically synchronized between different devices or browsers.
17. Saved Premix Calculations
The Saved Premix Calculations panel lets you keep multiple calculations for later reference.
Select:
Show
to display the saved calculations.
Select:
Hide
to collapse the list.
The calculator remembers whether you previously left this list open or closed when browser storage is available.
18. Load a Saved Calculation
Each saved entry includes a:
Load
button.
Selecting Load restores the saved:
- Ratio
- Mode
- Fuel or oil amount
- Unit
- Precision
The calculator then recalculates the result using those restored values.
19. Delete Saved Calculations
Each saved calculation has its own:
Delete
button.
Use it to remove only that particular saved entry.
When saved calculations exist, a:
Clear all
button is also available for removing all saved premix calculations stored by the calculator.
20. Reset the Calculator
Select:
Reset
to restore the calculator to its default state.
The default settings are:
- Ratio: 50:1
- Mode: Fuel → Oil
- Units: Liters
- Decimal precision: 2
Resetting the current calculator inputs does not automatically delete calculations that you previously saved.
21. Why the Correct Premix Ratio Matters
Two-stroke engines depend on oil mixed with the fuel for lubrication.
Using an incorrect mixture may contribute to problems such as:
- Poor engine performance
- Excessive smoke
- Spark plug fouling
- Carbon deposits
- Insufficient lubrication
- Accelerated engine wear
- Potential engine damage
The calculator only performs the mathematical conversion. It cannot determine which ratio your engine requires.
22. Always Check the Manufacturer’s Specification
Do not assume that every 2-stroke engine uses 50:1.
Older equipment, specialized engines, certain oils, break-in recommendations, and specific manufacturers may require a different mixture.
Check sources such as:
- The equipment owner’s manual
- The engine manufacturer’s instructions
- The product label
- The manufacturer’s official service information
Use the ratio specified for your particular equipment rather than relying solely on a commonly used premix ratio.
The calculator cannot determine the correct fuel-to-oil ratio for a particular engine, vehicle, tool, outboard motor, motorcycle, chainsaw, trimmer, or other piece of equipment. Always use the premix ratio, fuel type, oil specification, and mixing instructions provided by the engine or equipment manufacturer.
Incorrect fuel-to-oil mixtures can contribute to poor performance, excessive smoke, spark plug fouling, deposits, inadequate lubrication, accelerated wear, overheating, or engine damage.
Calculated values may also be affected by rounding, measurement accuracy, unit selection, fuel-container markings, and differences between US gallons and Imperial gallons. The calculator uses US liquid gallons when US Gallons is selected.
Measure fuel and oil using suitable, accurate containers or measuring equipment. Do not rely on approximate container markings when accurate measurements are important.
